LOS ANGELES, April 1 (Reuters) - American rapper and songwriter Megan Thee Stallion shared an update with fans on Instagram on Wednesday after being hospitalized the night before, saying she fell ill during her performance in the Broadway show "Moulin Rouge!"

“Last night ‌was a real wake-up call for me,” the rapper wrote. “I’ve been pushing myself past my limits lately, running on empty, and my body finally said enough.”

A spokesperson for Megan Thee Stallion confirmed in a press release that the performer underwent a medical evaluation Tuesday night. Doctors concluded she was suffering from extreme exhaustion and dehydration, along with vasoconstriction and low metabolic levels.

Echoing that assessment, the 31-year-old recalled feeling as though she might faint while onstage.

Megan Thee Stallion is currently starring as Harold Zidler, the flamboyant nightclub owner, in the Broadway production—marking the first gender-swapped casting of the role.

Despite the scare, the rapper struck an optimistic tone. She told fans she plans to take one day to rest and recover before returning to the stage on Thursday.

“I just need a day to reset and take care of myself,” she wrote. “I’ll be back feeling stronger.”

She closed the post by thanking ‌her fans for their continued support, sharing a photo of herself in full costume onstage. “Thank you for always riding with me and loving me through everything,” she added.

Megan Thee Stallion is a three-time Grammy Award winner and one of the most successful rappers of her generation. Her 2019 breakout hit “Hot Girl Summer,” featuring Nicki Minaj and Ty Dolla $ign, cemented her rise to mainstream stardom. The following year, her chart-topping single “Savage” earned two Grammys and dominated the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.

"Moulin Rouge!" opened with Megan Thee Stallion in the cast on March 24. The Broadway production is based on Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 jukebox musical film of the same name, starring Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor.

The story centers on Christian, a young English poet who falls in love with Satine, the glittering star courtesan of the Moulin Rouge nightclub.

Megan Thee Stallion is scheduled to appear in the role of Harold Zidler through May 17.
